Weasel Has a Magical Ride on a Woodpecker’s Back

Though this looks like something straight from a Disney movie, but the picture is very real. As adorable as it seems, the truth is quite frightening. The weasel wasn’t really riding the bird but trying to eat it.

These pictures were taken by an amateur photographer in East London called Martin Le-May. He captured the two animals fighting for their lives over Hornchurch Country Park.

Le-May explained that while he and his wife were walking in the park, they witnessed the weasel and the woodpecker fighting. “The bird flew across us and slightly in our direction; suddenly it was obvious it had a small mammal on its back and this was a struggle for life,” Le-May told Business Insider in a statement submitted through e-mail.

Weasels love to steal from nests, but it looked like this particular animal was after the woodpecker itself. Whatever the reason may be, the weasel seemed frustrated. After the bird flew by their sight and landed back, the woodpecker got away when the weasel got a little distracted by Le-May and his wife.

As Le-May wrote, “The woodpecker left with its life. The weasel just disappeared into the long grass, hungry.”
