China Takes a Major Step Towards Banning Mandatory Animal Testing For Beauty Products

China has taken a huge step towards eliminating cosmetics animal testing.

China has always required by law, for cosmetics to be tested on animals before and after they’re brought to the market. It is the biggest cosmetics market in the world and accounts for almost 20% of the global market.

According to China’s Gansu Province National Medical Products Association, it’s no longer a requirement for brands to undergo post-market mandatory tests on animals. But with these regulations, pre-market tests are still a requirement for imported cosmetics.

The Humane Society International tweeted about the news, saying that the news was, “encouraging but not yet a guarantee that no animal testing will ever again happen post-market, and pre-market animal testing for imported cosmetics remains as before.”

While animal testing will remain a part of the Chinese cosmetic market, the new regulations will definitely be seen as a positive change by cruelty-free advocates.
